A letter from Elrohir

Dear Ada

The journey was very boring, and we've been very good. Elladan fell in a river, Arwen complained all the time because she got a sore butt from riding, and Estel asked every other mile how much longer it would take to get to Lothlórien.
Master Erestor has a headache.

Can you send me sweets and some money, Ada? Please? I have spent my allowance already and Elladan doesn't want to share. He's so mean! And he already got into trouble with grandfather. BIG trouble!

Remember the helmet collection grandfather keeps in his study? Now, there's this dwarven one, from a battle back in some age or another, the one that has Lord Glorfindel's autograph on it?

Well, grandfather has told us that we never, ever should touch any of his helmets. But Elladan wanted to try this helmet on since our last visit with grandfather and grandmother, and I really, really, really told him not to, but you know what he is like when he's got his mind set on something.

So he stood on a chair and took it down and tried to put the helmet on, but it didn't fit, so I thought I give him a hand and hit him on the head with one of grandfather's swords.
But really only a light slap, honestly!

He screamed like a maiden, but at least the helmet was in place. Elladan looked really stupid, and then we heard somebody approaching the study, so he tried to get out of the helmet, but it didn't move. He tried and tried and I tried, too, but it didn't move an inch! Elladan started to cry, so l offered to cut the thing open with an axe, but he screamed and told me not to come close to him as I would decapitate him! What a wuzz! Just because of this one small incident last summer with your sword, and the wound wasn't big, anyway … I really don't know anybody who can hold a grudge like Elladan!

He ran around and bumped into one of grandfather's book shelves and all the books tumbled out, and then grandfather came in with grandmother and Haldir and everything was a mess - it was great!

Elladan was in hysterics, so was grandfather, and he ordered Haldir to take Elladan outside and try to get rid of the helmet. Haldir looked very annoyed, and he told Elladan he was a "took of an elfling". What is a "took", Ada?

Well, it didn't work, I guess I shouldn't have done the thing with the sword, because now Elladan's ears are swollen and that's why Haldir couldn't remove the helmet. Grandfather said it will take a day or two for the swelling to go back far enough to take the thing off. Elladan doesn't talk to me anymore because he says it's entirely my fault, but really, I was only trying to be helpful!

Now he's whining about having a headache, and Haldir said it would serve him right, and he was a nussance. What is a "nussance", Ada?

Grandfather has ordered Haldir to have an eye on Elladan all the time while we're staying here, and Haldir asked if he really had to as he was very busy watching the border, and grandfather said if he wouldn't go and do as he was told immediately he would spend the next century counting Orcs in Mirkwood. Can I count Orcs too when I'm grown up, Ada?

I have to run now, Rúmil has promised to show me Haldir's collection of adult 2nd age paintings.

I would love to tell you more about everything, but as grandmother said she would have a word with you, anyway, I thought I can finish here as well.

Your loving son

Elrohir

PS: Arwen will send you a messenger as well, but whatever she writes you, it's NOT true, she's just being mean, and I had NOTHING to do with it!
